Research Costs

Research costs

There are no additional costs for this kind of study if it is planned according to the CS requirements.

The costs of 1st mission that includes implementation and review service of LunAres Team starts from 1000 euro.

Any other mission starts from 500 euro.

Research costs depend on the specific requirements of each study, including:

  • Complexity of the study – the number and complexity of research procedures and their integration into mission operations.
  • Required LunAres team support – the level of coordination, operational support, monitoring, and study management required.
  • Required mission resources and time – the amount of crew time, infrastructure, equipment, mission schedule allocation, and other resources needed during the mission.
  • Amount of LunAres data requested – the scope and type of additional mission, operational, environmental, or other LunAres data required for the study.

The cost estimation can be shared after submitting a proposal with sufficient information.

The 1st mission costs start from 20 000 euro for a 14 day long mission.

  • Required adaptation of the standard mission – How many aspects of mission architecture and infrastructure would need to be adapted to the research. Or is the scope of the mission entirely new and would require planning from scratch.

The cost estimation can be shared after submitting a proposal with sufficient information.

What determines the cost of a research study?

Research costs are calculated individually because each study places different demands on the mission, crew, infrastructure, and LunAres team.

The main factors considered when preparing a cost estimate include:

  • Study duration
How long the research needs to be conducted, including the number of missions, mission days, or study periods required.
  • Number of participants
How many participants are required and whether data collection is individual or involves multiple participants.
  • Research activities
The procedures, tasks, measurements, questionnaires, experiments, or other activities that need to be performed during the mission.
  • Crew time
The amount of time required from participants for each session and across the study. Repeated or lengthy activities require greater allocation within the mission schedule.
  • Mission schedule
Whether research activities can be integrated into the existing mission schedule or require dedicated time, specific timing, or coordination with other mission activities.
  • Mission architecture
The extent to which the mission architecture, operational procedures, schedule, or other mission elements need to be modified to accommodate the research.
  • Pre- and post-mission activities
Any requirements for participant training, baseline measurements, equipment preparation, follow-up measurements, or other activities outside the main mission.
  • LunAres team support
The level of support required from the LunAres team, including research coordination, protocol preparation, equipment setup, operational support, monitoring, or on-board assistance.
  • Equipment and infrastructure
Research equipment, sensors, computers, software, workspace, power, network access, or other infrastructure required for the study.
  • Infrastructure adaptations
Any temporary, reversible, or more substantial modifications required to accommodate the research.
  • Special requirements
Any additional personnel, equipment, environmental requirements, operational procedures, or other resources that may affect implementation.

LunAres mission data
The type and amount of existing LunAres data requested for the research, such as operational, environmental, activity, or other mission data. The amount of LunAres data requested can affect both the complexity of data preparation and the overall research cost.

From Research Idea to Cost Estimate

To prepare a research proposal, researchers are asked to provide enough information for the LunAres team to understand the study and assess its operational requirements.

The proposal should describe:

  1. What you want to investigate
  2. Who needs to participate
  3. What participants will do
  4. How often and for how long the activities will take place
  5. What equipment or infrastructure is required
  6. What support is needed from the LunAres team
  7. What mission adaptations may be required
  8. What LunAres data are needed
  9. Any pre- or post-mission activities
  10. Any special safety or operational considerations

Providing detailed information at the proposal stage helps us determine the appropriate research format and prepare a more accurate cost estimate.
